Our Cat Breeds

Ragdoll

Given their amiable demeanor and laid-back character, Ragdoll cats are beloved by both families and individuals. They are docile and lovely. They would gladly play the best friend to anyone they encounter and adore spending the day playing with their owners.

Lifespan

12 - 17 years

Weight

4.5 - 9kg

Colour

Ragdolls have three different coat designs, each with four distinct color options.

What You Need to Know

Ragdoll Appearance

A huge, impressive, and lavishly coated cat breed is the ragdoll. A long, slender cat with a broad chest, a short neck, and strong legs may be found below an amazing silky, dense, and semi-long to long haired coat. The adult cat’s coat develops into fluffy trousers on the hind legs, a regal ruff around the neck, and a long, bushy tail.

Ragdoll Personality

The Ragdoll cat is referred to as “astonishingly equable” and is a very amiable, laid-back, and loving cat to live with. However, owners rarely keep only one Ragdoll because of their alluring looks and calm, relaxed personalities.

Ragdolls are curious and inclined to help you with daily tasks, although they prefer to relax by reading or doing paperwork, or they will watch you work in the garden from a sunny position.

There was a long-running myth that Ragdolls were overly floppy, had a reduced pain threshold, and would just “flop” when picked up. Some people interpreted this to suggest that they would make wonderful kid’s toys! That is not the situation. The same pain threshold as all cats, ragdolls are not floppy and will not put up with being treated like toys by kids (or anybody else!).

Generally healthy breed

The Ragdoll breed may be predisposed to: – Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle thickens excessively, impairing the ability of the heart to contract properly.
– Polycystic kidney disease, a genetic illness in which kidney cysts occur. This has an impact on renal function and may ultimately result in kidney failure. It is important to remember that this breed has a lesser risk of contracting the disease than other cat breeds that are predisposed to it.

Testing available:
– Ragdoll hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease DNA testing can determine whether a cat is at risk for developing these conditions.

Russian Blue

The Russian Blue is a lovely medium-sized cat that is long and lithe, highly muscular, and graceful. It has a body that is somewhat “foreign,” which in cat words means “like a Siamese cat.” Despite having a wedge-shaped head, Russian Blues have wide cheekbones that give them an open, happy countenance that is framed by very large, flared ears. Legs are long and thin, and the paws are neatly fashioned into an oval. Russian Blues are renowned for having thick, dense, and luxurious coats.

Lifespan

10 - 15 years

Weight

3 - 7kg

Colour

Medium silvery-blue color without any ghost or white marks.

What You Need to Know

Russian Blue Personality

The Russian Blue makes a charming and stylish companion. When interacting with strangers, they can be a little aloof. Rather than rushing in for head rubs and lap time, they prefer to observe from a distance and assess a stranger’s suitability for friendship. A Russian Blue will expect you to satisfy all of their needs and wants once they have evaluated and approved you. They are very affectionate! They can make enjoyable and generally low-maintenance feline friends because they are playful and loving.

Generally healthy breed

There are no widely recognised health problems in the Russian Blue cat breed.

British Shorthair

The British Shorthair, also known as the British Blue cat, is one of the oldest recognized cat breeds. It is generous, lively, and attention-seeking as cats come. A British Blue cat will do everything in their power to attract your attention and win your much-appreciated affection if you’re in their vicinity.

Lifespan

12 - 17 years

Weight

3 - 7.7kg

Colour

Comes in solid colours, with or without white markings, tabby patterns, and Siamese patterns, but the most recognisable is the blue with striking orange eyes.

What You Need to Know

British Shorthair Appearance

The British Shorthair is a compact, chunky cat that ranges in size from medium to large. It is renowned for its attractive features and thick, plush coat.

The British Shorthair is a short-coupled, sturdy cat with large, round eyes and a round face that give it an adorable expression and loads of personality.

British Shorthair Personality

The British Shorthair is a very sociable cat who is affectionate, playful, and loyal. However, like many cats, they may take some time to warm up to strangers. The British Shorthair, a surprisingly gregarious and relatively quiet cat, gets along well with other cats in the home and will make friends with other house pets as well, especially cat-friendly dogs.

Generally healthy breed

The polycystic kidney disease, an inherited condition where kidney cysts develop, can be a risk factor for the British Shorthair cat breed. This has an impact on kidney function and may ultimately result in kidney failure.
– Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle thickens abnormally, making it difficult for the heart to contract properly.

– British Shorthair autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome, a serious condition in which an excessive number of immune cells are produced, causing organ enlargement, anemia, and general ill health.

Testing available:

– British Shorthair autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome DNA testing, which determines whether or not a cat is at risk of developing this condition.

Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is a large cat with an athletic body that matches their impressive size. They have broad, pointed ears held tall and wide, and they look intelligent.

The long, thick coat has tufts on the ears and paws and is made up of an undercoat that is thickly coated in a glossy, waterproof top coat. Their magnificent tails should be at least as long as their bodies so that they can wrap them around their bodies for additional insulation.

Lifespan

9 - 15 years

Weight

4.8 - 8.2kg

Colour

The Maine Coon cat breed has a variety of 64 different colours and markings. Their eyes maybe green, gold or copper - in white cats it is possible to have blue or odd eyes.

What You Need to Know

Maine Coon Personality

The warm, lively, and sociable temperament of Maine Coon cats makes them excellent pets. They are great companions for someone who appreciates having such a large cat in their house since they enjoy being around people. Maine Coon cats are renowned for their lovely, soft chirping sound.

Generally healthy breed

The cardiac muscle of the Maine Coon cat breed can grow unusually thick due to a disorder called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which prevents the heart from beating properly.
Hip dysplasia refers to a condition in which the hip joint does not grow properly.

– Pyruvate kinase deficiency, a condition that results in anemia (red blood cell loss).

– Spinal muscular atrophy, a condition that weakens the muscles and causes nerve loss.

Testing available:

– DNA testing can determine whether or not a cat is at risk for developing spinal muscular atrophy, pyruvate kinase deficiency, or Maine Coon hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

American Shorthair

The early days of American settlement are deeply ingrained in the history of the American Shorthair cat breed. These felines traveled to the New World with European settlers.

They were essential in keeping an ecosystem healthy and safeguarding crops from rodents. The American Shorthair breed evolved over several generations through intermarriage with European cat breeds.

Their ancestry demonstrates their extraordinary capacity to coexist peacefully with people and provides a tale of resiliency, adaptation, and camaraderie.

Lifespan

12 - 17 years

Weight

3 - 7.7kg

Colour

Comes in solid colours, with or without white markings, tabby patterns, and Siamese patterns, but the most recognisable is the blue with striking orange eyes.

What You Need to Know

American Shorthair Appearance

The body of an American Shorthair cat is broad in the chest and well-muscled. Their eyes are big and expressive, and they have a round head and plump cheeks. They have a large variety of colors and patterns on their short coat.

American Shorthair Personality

The strong and unique appearance of the American Shorthair cat is a reflection of their heritage as accomplished hunters. Males are typically larger than females, and their size ranges from medium to enormous. While their round features and expressive eyes come in a variety of fascinating colors, their strong bodies exude strength and grace.

They have medium-sized ears that are slightly rounded at the tips, and their charming look of alertness and curiosity is enhanced. Notably, each American Shorthair cat is incredibly distinct and exquisite due to the great variety of colors and patterns displayed in their short, dense coats.

Generally healthy breed

Even while American Shorthair cats often have good health, it’s always vital to be aware of any potential issues. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a cardiac condition that can afflict cats of any breed, is one prevalent cause for concern.

In order to monitor the health of their hearts and identify any early indications of the condition, routine veterinarian check-ups, which include cardiac examinations, are essential.

One further problem to be aware of is polycystic kidney disease (PKD), which is defined by the growth of kidney cysts. Genetic testing and ethical breeding methods contribute to a decrease in PKD cases in American Shorthair cats.

Maintaining up-to-date knowledge and working closely with reliable physicians and breeders can guarantee the health and life of your feline friend.

Sphynx

Sphynx cats differ in their degree of hairlessness, with some having a very fine “peach fuzz” all over and others having just a fine fuzz over the extremities. Their lack of fur is still the most noticeable trait of this stunning cat. The lack of fur allows everyone to clearly see the Sphynx cat’s bone structure and muscle. This cat is incredibly strong, with long, graceful lines and slightly loose skin that develops wrinkles in certain spots.

They have a tail that is rather long, tidy, rounded paws, and a head that is slightly wedge-shaped with enormous eyes and ears.

Lifespan

8 - 14 years

Weight

2.5 - 5.5kg

Colour

Sphynx cats come in all colours and coat patterns, which can be seen in the very fine fur on their faces, and the pigmented skin over the body.

What You Need to Know

Sphynx Personality

The Sphynx is an energetic, highly bright, curious, and friendly cat who many people describe as being almost dog-like in their friendliness to both family and strangers. They are another extrovert type. Be ready to be monitored and aided in all domestic activities, from paperwork to DIY, cooking to having a bath, since they are very extroverted, want to be the center of attention, and will want to be engaged in everything you do.

The Sphynx is also rare in that it is quite social and will love the company of other animals, especially other Sphynx cats. Please note that this does not mean that they will entertain themselves, but rather that you will always have numerous Sphynx cats watching over and helping you.

The fact that a hairless cat likes warmth and can be incredibly affectionate and enjoys sneaking under the covers when given the opportunity is not surprising.

Generally healthy breed

Due to their lack of a fur coat, Sphynx cats are more prone to skin diseases and sunburn.
The breed is also susceptible to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle thickens excessively, making it difficult for the heart to contract properly.

– Congenital myasthenic syndrome, which can result in neurological symptoms and muscle weakness.

Munchkin

The Munchkin has a thick, fluffy coat and is a medium-sized cat with a middling body type and head shape. There is a long-haired variation of the coat, which is available in a wide range of hues and patterns.
The Munchkin is distinguished by its unusually small legs, which result from a genetic abnormality, giving the cat a fairly long, low appearance.

Lifespan

12 - 15 years

Weight

2.3 - 4kg

Colour

Munchkin cats come in multiple colours and patterns

What You Need to Know

Munchkin Personality

You wouldn’t be far off the mark if you said “cat-weasel” when you first met a Munchkin. The Munchkin move very differently from standard-legged cats, with a much wrigglier, rolling motion, and they can find it difficult to jump (although many can).

The Munchkin is curious, intelligent, friendly, and playful, but in other ways is similar to any domestic cat. They may be more inclined to enjoy cuddling and lap time than others, but they are also eager to practice their feline hunting behavior by chasing and going after toys if given the chance.

Generally healthy breed

The Munchkin breed has short legs, which is a deformity that makes them more prone to arthritis.

Abyssinian

The Abyssinian has a strikingly wild appearance and gives the impression of a recent arrival from the jungle, an extreme athlete. The Abyssinian is a supermodel of a cat, being thin and long, with a lean, muscular build, a head that is only slightly wedge-shaped, and large, almond-shaped eyes. The Abyssinian has a long, slender tail, small, oval feet, and fine, glossy hair all over its body.

Lifespan

9 - 15 years

Weight

2.7 - 4.5kg

Colour

Originally only seen in a sandy wild-cat reddish brown, the Abyssinian may now sport a variety of colours, see the GCCF and CFA websites for further details.

What You Need to Know

Abyssinian Personality

The Abyssinian cat is a very sociable, curious, and inquisitive feline who will take great pleasure in helping or supervising any activity you happen to be engaged in, despite not being a lap-cat because this is not a feline to curl up and relax much. To keep a cat happy and content with life, owners will need to actively enjoy and be amused by a cat who wants to get involved in household tasks, and be prepared to play lengthy games.

This cat, described as fiercely devoted and playful, will need owners who spend a lot of time at home because you don’t want an Abyssinian to amuse themselves unsupervised!

Generally healthy breed

Pyruvate kinase deficiency, a condition that results in anemia (the death of red blood cells), can affect Abyssinian cats.
– Progressive retinal atrophy, an inherited condition in which a portion of the eye deteriorates and withers away, potentially leading to blindness.

– Amyloidosis, a condition where proteins accumulate in the tissues and organs and can cause organ failure.

Testing available:

– Pyruvate kinase deficiency and progressive retinal atrophy DNA testing to determine whether a cat is at risk for developing these conditions.

Siamese and Abyssinian AA proteins differ in primary sequence and pattern of deposition in familial amyloidosis in cats, according to T. A. Niewold et al.’s 1999 study published in The Journal of Protein Folding Disorders.

Devon Rex

Due to their curly hair, Devon Rex cats are appropriately called “Poodle cats.” This highly intelligent cat breed can even be taught to jump, heel, or fetch when properly trained. Because of their playful personalities and gentle demeanor, they make excellent companions.

Lifespan

9 - 15 years

Weight

2.3 - 4.5kg

Colour

The Devon Rex comes in any colour or colour combination, with or without white markings and in a variety of patterns.

What You Need to Know

Devon Rex Appearance

The high cheekbones, big eyes, and prominent ears give the tiny to medium-sized Devon Rex a cute, pixie-like appearance. This breed is distinguished by its distinctive coat, which is crinkled and waved all over a hard, muscular body. The Devon Rex has relatively delicate whiskers and eyebrows that are crinkled yet may break off readily, resulting in “designer stubble,” because of the genetic mutation that gives rise to this curly coat.

Devon Rex Personality

The irrepressible, inquisitive, mischievous, and extremely energetic Devon Rex personality. No matter how inappropriate it may be, they want to be a part of whatever you are doing. They love to wrap up on your lap or across your shoulders and silently watch you read, cook, or even go to the bathroom because they are so people-oriented.

Although not a particularly noisy cat, they will chirp and chirrup until you pay attention if they feel ignored. As they can climb well and become destructive if bored or lonely, these cats shouldn’t be left unattended for an extended period of time.

Generally healthy breed

The following conditions are common in the Devon Rex breed: – Hypotrichosis, a condition in which some portions of the fur do not develop, which can lead to skin infections.
– Devon Rex myopathy, a syndrome that results in nervous symptoms and muscle weakening.

– Polycystic kidney disease, a genetic illness in which kidney cysts occur. This has an impact on renal function and may ultimately result in kidney failure. It is important to remember that this breed has a lesser risk of contracting the sickness than other cat breeds that are susceptible to the issue. This has an impact on renal function and may ultimately result in kidney failure.

Testing available:

– Devon Rex myopathy and polycystic renal disease DNA testing, which determines whether or not a cat is at risk of developing these conditions.
